Amboseli National Park
The park lies at the
foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest
mountain at 5,895m. Kilimanjaro snow
capped peaks dominate every aspect of
this Park and form a stunning backdrop
to the wildlife found here - elephant,
lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, cheetah
and a host of plains game. Part of the
Park is composed of a dried-up lake bed
which, in the shimmering heat, produces
fascinating mirages.
Parts of
Amboseli national park lies on lake bed
and is
subject to sporadic floods but permanent
watering places for the game are
provided by swamps and springs, fed by
underground rivers from Kilimanjaro
melting snow.
The area is home to
the Masai people, tall, proud, nomadic
warriors famous for their legendary
prowess in battle and single handed acts
of bravery in fights with wild animals.
Perhaps, more than any other people they
have learned to live in complete harmony
with the wildlife which surrounds them.
Years ago, Amboseli was the
locale around which such famous
writers as Ernest Hemingway and
Robert Roark spun their stories
of big game hunting in the wilds
of Africa.
It is also
the home of the Maasai people, those
tall, proud nomads whose legendary
prowess in battle and single handed acts
of bravery in fights with wild animals
has spread across the globe. The Maasai
have learned to live in complete harmony
with their environment and the wildlife
which surrounds them.
