The Royal mara lodge

The Masai Mara game park consists of the National Reserve encircled by the contiguous conservation areas of Trans Mara, Koyiaki, Lemek, Olchorro, Olkinyei and Siana, collectively owned by local Maasai tribes. Game park fees are charged in all these areas. The wildlife freely roams and grazes throughout the vast Masai Mara Ecosystem under the patrol of armed rangers to ensure animal preservation. There are no boundaries, fences, or walls to obstruct the mass movement of animals. The Royal Mara is situated along the Mara River in the richest game viewing section of the entire Masai Mara Ecosystem: the Western Masai Mara. We operate our game drives along the Mara River sections of western Koyiaki and the western National Reserve. It is here that the largest numbers of wildlife congregate for river watering and Serengeti river crossing migration.

The Royal Mara is ideally situated for game drive viewing. The royal mara lodge is set out in the Koyiaki conservation area approximately five miles upriver from the world renowned Koyiaki-Kichwa migration crossing point. Leopard Gorge and Musiara Marsh made famous by the BBC's Big Cat Diary program are just a four mile and seven mile distance respectively south of the Royal Mara. The other well known crossing point at "Mara Serena" is only a fifteen mile game drive down river from the Royal Mara. Several lion prides are within proximity of the lodge with the "Maternity" pride on our periphery, the "Aitong" pride to our north and the Musiara Marsh, "Acacia Woodland," and Ridge prides to our south. In contrast to the National Reserve area, the Koyiaki conservation area allows game walks and night game drives enabling us to offer our guests a fulfilling safari experience.

Experience luxurious standards of comfort and the personal attention of an exclusive butler. Our elegant carved furnishings will leave you with memorable impressions. At night listen to bush sounds from roaming wildlife. Resident hippos abandon their river sanctuary after sundown to graze between the river guest suites which are positioned on raised wooden decks with protective railings to insure the safety of our guests at all times

Enjoy nonstop game viewing from your private accommodations. The tent canvas wall frontage of our river guest suites can be opened completely to afford a spectacular open river view from their entire sleeping and bathroom areas. Relax on one of our chaise longe and watch the hippos bobbing in the Mara River below your veranda and the baboons and other wildlife roaming in the bush across the river. Take a stroll along our campsite and watch the parade of animals and birds watering along the picturesque marsh and at our waterhole and lagoon.

Our riverfront guest suite facilities include: hand carved super size king or double beds, double vanity sinks, carved desks, dining sets, en suite bathrooms with flush toilets, bidets, and showers, fully stocked mini-bars, private safe deposit boxes and lounge areas. All facilities have telephone access with the reception office and enjoy electric and hot water service.

At the Royal Mara every meal is a distinct, unforgettable experience. Meals are served in varied wildlife dining arrangements. Breakfasts may be taken near a hippo pool watching resident hippos bobbing in the river or on the open savannah among grazing herds. Barbecue lunches may be enjoyed in our dining area or on the Mara River under a tree shade. Dinners can be scheduled in our dining area, in your private riverfront guest suite, under the stars in the bush amid wildlife under the protection of Maasai warriors or in our traditional fire-lit secluded bush boma.

Breakfasts consist of juices, milk, cereals, eggs with bacon or sausage, pancakes or waffles, tea or brewed coffee, toast, croissants, muffins and other fresh bakery items. Lunches include barbecued steaks and hamburgers, gourmet dishes with a rich assortment of vegetarian plates, soups, salads, cakes and pastries laid out on a sumptuous salad and dessert bar.

Dinners are table d'hote in a candle lit campfire atmosphere. Guests enjoy five course dinners with varied appetizers, soups, salads and dinner entrees capped off with elegant desserts. For guests on a three day safari one night Maasai Il Moran warriors perform cultural jumping dances in our fire lit bush boma.

Bring good walking shoes and take a walking safari with us. Feel the wilderness, smell the air and leave your footprint in the ground. There is nothing more exhilarating than the thrill of seeing big game on foot. Game walks are conducted in high density wildlife areas of the Masai Mara in the company of Maasai guides and armed guards at a comfortable pace with intermittent stops.

If you are a bird enthusiast you will be thrilled with the wide selection of birds visible in the Royal Mara area. Our marsh and lagoon areas attract a caravan of varied wildfowl and raptor birds. Bird safaris on foot or by 4WD can also be arranged to explore the open savannah or other nearby marshes.

Take a hot air balloon ride and float across the savannah plains above herds of wildlife. You will be transported to the launching site in the early morning and after a one hour balloon ride you will enjoy an open savannah champagne breakfast followed by a game drive back to the camp.

Relax in our lounge area anytime throughout the day. Enjoy reading one of our library books with photos of African wildlife or of the Maasai people. In the afternoon we offer tea time refreshments with a selection of biscuits, scones, croissant or finger sandwiches. Throughout the day you can enjoy a cooling fruit drink or a refreshing soft drink.
