work can be seen in the Giorgis Cathedral built in 1896 to mark the
victory of Ethiopia over the invading Italians. The Ethnographic Museum
is well worth a visit with its two main sections covering local crafts
and on regions and people. Here you can learn about Ethiopia”s rich
ethnic diversity.
The museum holds an impressive display of Religious
crosses, triptychs and murals. Haile Selassies’s bedroom and bathrooms
are also on display. One of the most important museums is the smaller
National Museum holding the fossil’s of “Lucy”. These 3.5 million year
old remains are perhaps from our earliest ancestor. Mercato is the
largest market in East Africa. Here you can buy everything from potatoes. |

crater lakes

Drive 45 kms.
south of Addis Ababa through scenic countryside to arrive in Debra-Zeyit
and visit the crater lakes of Hora and Bishoftu where many species of
birds can be seen. You will enjoy a short boat trip on Lake Hora before
returning to Addis Ababa.

water springs
(Full Day)
Drive 115 km along
the western road out of Addis Ababa crossing fertile land to arrive at
Woliso. After lunch, one can swim or take a bath in the hot spring of
Woliso, believed to be a curing spring against some illnesses.
melka-kunture &
adadi mariam
(Half Day)
Drive 62 km. on
the Addiss-Buatjira direction to visit the paleontolgical site of
Meleka-Kenture, which is nearly 2 million years old. A few kilometers
further south from Meleka-Kenture, visit the rock-hewn church of Adadi
Mariam built in the 13th century.

Mrnagesha
forest
(Half Day)
Menagesha is
located 35 km. west of Addis Ababa. On the way visit Gefersa water
supply reservoir and its many birds including the Blue Winged Goose, the
Black Headed Siskin, Rougets Rail, etc. Walk through the forest of
Menagesha Mountain which is covered with many different types of trees
like “Tid” (Giant Juniper), “Zigba” (Podocarpus Gracilior) and “Kosso” (Hyginea
Abyssinca) some of which are over 400 years old. Drive back to Addis
Ababa arriving at noon.
Ambo & wonchi
crater lake (Full Day)
Drive to Ambo,
which is located 125 km. west of Addis. Pass by Lake Gefersa and arrive
at Addis Alem Church built during the reign of Menelik II. Arrive at
Ambo for lunch and after visit Lake Wonchi before driving back to Addis
Ababa.
debre-zeyit &
mount zuquala
(Full Day)
Pass through the
industrial area south of Addis and continue driving to Debre-Zeyit.
Visit the crater lake of Bishoftu and then proceed to Lake Hora for a
boat trip. After lunch, drive to Mount Zuquala with its crater lake and
monastery to find a stupendous panoramic view of the Rift Valley to the
east, Mount Entoto and Addis Ababa to the north. Drive back to Addis
Ababa in the late afternoon.
debre-libanos &
blue nile gorge
(Full Day)
Situated some 103
kms. north of Addis Ababa there is a side road leading to the ancient
monastery of Debre Libanos. On the way, endemic mammals such as Gelada
Baboon as well as some endemic birds can be seen. Proceed to Blue Nile
Gorge. Drive back to Addis Ababa in the late afternoon.
suba forest &
addis alem
(Full Day)
Drive west of
Addis to arrive at Suba, the nearest forest park pf the capital city. A
walk through the forest and picnic is enjoyable. After lunch, drive to
Addis Alem to visit the church of Saint Mary with its beautiful
paintings. It was built during the reign of Menelik II. Drive back to
Addis Ababa in the afternoon.
