Bateleur Camp Masai Mara

The  Camp is a  nine spacious tents facility and is one of the finest camp in Kenya. Set among forests on the edge of the Mara just below the site where the famous final scene in *Out of Africa* was filmed, the camp authentically recreates the experience of those halcyon days, right down to the personal service of your private butler.

Bateleur Camp Masai mara at Kichwa Tembo nestles in a lush riverine forest, overlooking the vast plains of the Masai Mara. Situated within sight of the Mara River, with the Oloololo Escarpment - one of the "steps" of The Great Rift Valley - as a dramatic backdrop, the camp offers its guests one of Kenya's best game-viewing experiences, and exceptional standards of service from the warm, professional and attentive Kenyan staff. Tents under wood-shingled roofs, and a treasure-trove of beautiful antiques, books and memorabilia reflect the ambience of Kenyan safaris of the 20s and 30s.

The tented suites epitomise classic elegance with highly polished floors, and crisp linen clad, wooden-framed beds cooled by the rhythm of ceiling fans. Glass walled showers, twin hand basins and a separate flush w.c are en suite with forest views.

Bateleur Camp is located in the Masai Mara National Reserve. The Reserve lies directly in the path of what is considered to be the greatest spectacle in the animal kingdom: the annual migration of thousands of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania.

The unfenced Masai Mara covers 1500km together with the neighbouring Serengeti combined, they form one ecosystem, is home to the greatest concentration of large mammals on earth. The great migration of over two million wildebeest and other grazing ungulates every year is the Mara's foremost attraction and one of the greatest spectacles in the animal kingdom. Each year, far south in the vast Serengeti, the wildebeest raise their heads, sniff the air, and as if of one accord, start the long trek to the Kenyan border. An endless thunder of wildebeest and zebra enter the Mara around the end of July, drawn by the sweet grass. Add to this the richness of fauna, profusion of winged beauty and untouched landscape, and you have magical Masai Mara.

You will find every possible comfort, including an unexpectedly expansive en-suite bathroom. There is also a writing desk, subtle lighting and ceiling fans in each tent. The ultimate indulgence - a personal butler service - ensures you are pampered in style. The nine tented rooms reflect classic luxury. The tents feature safari architecture of sweeping canvas, traditional shingle and highly polished hardwood. Underfoot lie fine needlepoint rugs.

The secluded, comfortable interiors of the camp are enhanced by fine antiques, leather- buttoned Chesterfield sofas, keepsakes of distant days such as polished compasses and cabin trunks with their original passage labels, as well as a wide selection of library books. The interiors transport you to the heyday of colonial safaris, to an epoch of romance, canvas and candlelight.

The main guest area, which is shaded by a dense forest canopy, has a reception area and a comfortable lounge with a fireplace. While you are relaxing inside the camp, you can take in endless, game-filled plains with the dramatic Oloololo Escarpment as a backdrop.

The tree-shaded lap pool, almost 13 metres long, is a refreshing feature. The camp has a small curio shop, and you are welcome to visit the larger shop at Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp. The dining area and veranda have views of the endless game-filled plains of the Mara. Pan-African cuisine is served with flair. After dinner, enjoy a glass of port in front of the fire.

All walks and game drives are led by the Bateleur camp guides. They have all achieved the highest scores in the Masai Mara, in the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association examination. There are morning and afternoon game drives in open Land Rovers (night game drives are not allowed in the park). Fascinating night explorations traverse the private concession adjacent to the reserve in search of predators and other nocturnal animals.

Regretfully children under 5 years cannot participate on game drives. Children (sharing with adults) 0 - 5 years = free of charge, 6 - 11 years = charged half rate
