10 DAYS RENDILLE KENYA CAMEL SAFARI WALK – Ref GT 047
Duration : 10 days 9 nights
Departs on request
Day 1 - Mt Kenya:
Depart our Nairobi office and travel to Mt Kenya.
Day 2 – Ngurunet:
Depart early to Laisamis via Isiolo on the Marsabit road.
From Laisamis we head west through the Kaisut desert to
Ngurunet.
Day 3 - Walking:
We start the walk with camels as pack animals and local
Rendille camel guides. The route may vary each time but basically
we head south of the Ndotos to the Malgis Lugger, which
brings water from the Wamba, Maralal and Baragoi areas. Camp
near the riverbed.
Day 4 - Walking:
Day spent walking upstream. Again camp on or near the river
bed. The local Rendille and Samburu people dig wells here.
Picture taking is a problem and we suggest you just watch.
Day 5 - Walking:
Head away from the Malgis towards the Ndotos and Keno River.
Keno is a small clear stream, nice to wash in and cool off.
Day 6 - Walking:
Leave camp early and head uphill with camel guides into the upper
forest. A stick is handy here to fend off bushes. Views from
the top are excellent on clear days and the forest is a
beautiful change after the hot arid desert. Look out for
elephant, buffalo, wild dogs and birds, particularly and
Go-away-bird.
Day 7 - Turkana:
Depart by vehicle to Lake Turkana and Loiyangalani.
Day 8 - Turkana:
Day spent relaxing around the lake area.
Day 9 - Maralal:
We head south to Maralal via South Horr and Baragoi.
Day 10 - Nairobi:
South over the Laikipia plains to Nyahururu and Thompsons
Falls. Then down the Rift Valley via Naivasha to Nairobi.
6 DAYS
KARISIA HILLS KENYA CAMEL SAFARI WALK – Ref KL 048
Duration : 6 days 5 nights
Departs on request
Day 1.
Arrive at Kisima airstrip and drive to
Ngabolo, a camp in a glade surrounded by towering trees. Our
team of friendly staff and camels will welcome us and we
will spend the afternoon in around camp. In the evening we
will stroll along the forest edge or for those feeling
energetic an optional trip for sundowners on Naibor Keju
(white feet in Samburu), an incredible rock face that juts
up and gives a great view of the Karisia Hills and where we
will be going.
Day 2.
Once our camels are loaded we will walk up
into the forest where we are likely to see and hear birds
such as Grey Cuckoo-Shrikes, Little Brown Warblers, and
Chestnut Throated Apalis. We may also encounter some Samburu
collecting honey or medicinal plants far from their
Manyattas below. We will then traverse north to Sunbird
Camp, a lovely glade with springs and a chilly nip to the
morning air. In this high country we are likely to see a
great deal of sign of Buffalo and Elephant. If we are lucky
we will find a herd close by.
Day 3.
As we hike up or camel ride around from
Sunbird Camp we will pass through enormous forests of Old
growth Podocarpus Trees. Here among these magnificent trees
we may find Red-fronted Parrots calling and commuting
between roost trees and foraging areas. We will walk down an
old road to Hyena Springs, a camp with a commanding view of
the dry country to the east of the Karisia Hills. Here we
may be able to see Dwarf Mongooses, Jackals and hear Hyena
calling in the night.
Day 4.
We head down into a starkly different kind of
habitat occupied by a totally different assemblage of
plants, trees and animals. The country on the eastern edge
of the Karisias is dry and hot and an interesting ecology
has adapted to the harsh conditions. We will adapt by hiking
or camel riding in the cool of the morning only and retiring
to the shade of our camp, Acacia camp in the afternoon.
Day 5.
From Acacia camp we will continue south and
around the southern edge of the Karisia Hills and into the
Suiyan Lugga, where we will camp above some hand dug wells.
In this habitat we can find a great diversity of birds, from
the diminutive red-faced Crombec to the showy Hornbills that
seem to announce our arrival every few moments. At dusk it
is common to hear the herders on the hillside singing for
their cows as they return to the shelter of their temporary
boma (a thorn enclosure to protect them from Lions, Hyenas
and Wild Dogs).
Day 6
Today we will travel North and west back into
the foothills of the Karisia just south of where we started.
At Rapa we will make camp for our last night.
7 DAYS NGAU
SUISUI KENYA CAMEL SAFARI WALK – Ref KL 049
Duration : 7 days 6 nights
Departs on request
Day 1.
We will meet you at a local Laikipia airstrip and then
we will drive to the Ewaso Nyiro River where our camels,
team of staff, and camp will be waiting. We will camp on the
upper end of the Ewaso Nyiro River, which is the same river
that eventually flows through Samburu National Park. Camp at
Mukongodo, a lovely Yellow Fever Tree shaded Camp on the
edge of the river. Impala may greet us at camp.
Day 2.
We will walk downstream to a camp called Namborr, a
place where we can swim and enjoy the water. This area is
popular with elephants and we might see other game such as
Eland and Gravy's Zebra. The vegetation around here is
predominantly Euphorbia and Acacia and it is popular with
Gerenuk.
Day 3.
We will walk downstream into the drier hilly country
where the river cuts through a gorge and rushes through
great rocks (Lorginyang - Crocodile Jaws). Camp will be at
Leshashi, under shady Tortillis trees by some rapids and
hopefully we shall see Klipspringer on the rocky slopes.
Day 4.
We will walk on, further downstream, towards Namasaa a
famous crossing place on the river. The landscape is
spectacular and we will camp under some enormous Neutonia
Trees, watching out for hippos in the deep pools. We will
stay in this camp for two nights and at night we will be
likely to be serenaded by Pearl-Spotted Owlets.
Day 5.
We will wake up early and walk to the pinnacle, Ngai
Suisui, that has a dramatic 360 degree view of the area and
is also the nesting site for a pair of Verreaux Eagles. We
will have breakfast up on the rock and meander back down to
the river where we will relax during the heat of the day. If
we are lucky we might see a Greater Kudu on the hillside, a
Bristled-Crowned Starling flying above the rapids or a
Goliath Heron fishing in the quiet water.
Day 6.
Cross the river and climb out of the river valley. Then
we will climb the high ridges along the edge of the Leroghi
Plateau where we will enjoy incredible views of the Karisia
Hills and Lewarges, the highest peak in the Mathews Range.
Later we will drop down on to the Kirimun lugga where we
will camp on a seasonal river, popular with Klipspringers
and a local Leopard. We will have sundowners on a jutting
rock outcrop, with stunning views over northern Kenya.
Day 7.
On our final day we will walk to Ol Malo, a luxury lodge
hosted by Colin and Rocky Francombe, on the edge of the
Laikipia Plateau. The views from here are incredible and
from the rooms you can enjoy the view of Mt. Kenya and the
wildlife coming to the salt lick below. Each room is
luxuriously decorated and the swimming pool sits on the edge
of the escarpment. We will arrive at Ol Malo by lunchtime
and enjoy an afternoon relaxing by the pool followed by an
evening walk, horse ride or game drive.
Day 8.
Flight from Ol Malo to your next destination.

Kenya camel walking Safari at
Tumaren – 6 nights
Day 1
We will meet you at Rendille/Kimancho airstrip before
lunch. It is a short drive to our camp on the Ewaso Nyiro
River. The camp will be along the banks of the river and the
central area under a big Fig Tree.
Lunch will be in our tented camp and then an afternoon walk
and sundowners looking towards Mt. Kenya. On the evening
walk we could see elephant, impala, reticulated giraffe and
grant’s gazelle. Hot showers will be waiting for us on
arrival at camp and after drinks under the stars we will
have a sit down dinner.
Day 2
After a leisurely wake up, we will go on a morning walk
and come back to camp for brunch. On our walk we should see
some wildlife and will look for interesting birds. We could
go on a game drive/walk in the afternoon and if anyone wants
a night drive we could also do this.
Day 3
Wake up early and after breakfast we will walk to our
next camp on a beautiful rock with an incredible view.
Whilst we are having breakfast our Samburu team will pack
the camels and set off for our next camp. Riding camels will
be with us and can be ridden when anyone wishes and they
also carry refreshments. We will arrive at lunchtime and
relax in the heat of the day. In the afternoon we will have
sundowners on the top of the rock looking for Lesser Kudu,
Klipspringer.
Day 4
We will wake up early again and walk past some cliffs
looking for a Verreaux Eagle and for Klipspringers. We will
then descend in to the drier hot country and on to the
Sinyai Lugga, which is a wide sand river that sweeps through
the hills. The birdlife down here is very different and the
hopefully we will see the Samburu people digging in the sand
to get fresh clear water for their livestock. On arrival at
camp we will have a delicious lunch waiting. In the
afternoon we will relax around camp and bird watch in the
immediate area.
Day 5
Pack up the camp and the camels will move our camp and
we will walk through the morning to a new camp called
Namborr on the river, further downstream. We will arrive in
camp at about lunchtime and spend the day swimming, fishing
and enjoying the immediate area. We could have a bush dinner
under the stars away from our camp.
Day 6
After breakfast we would walk further downstream and
camp close to a Laikipia Masai Manyatta. In the evening we
would walk to the manyatta and spend some time with the
Laikipia Masai. They are very colourful people and we could
arrange a dance or simply enjoy walking around and visiting
the manyatta.
Day 7
After breakfast we will drive to the airstrip, which is
about 30 minutes away in time for a flight to Nanyuki
