Hemmingway's beach club Kenya

The beach hotel is the intimate, the club is built at the edge of the beach-the ocean can be seen from most rooms. The impression is one of pristine white wash and spacious stone terraces. There are two sparkling blue swimming pools, and a multitude of very tall coconut palms continually wave in the breeze. The Kenya exudes a casual “up market” elegance.

Hemmingway's beach club Kenya is renowned  for deep sea fishing and is also romantic and relaxing getaway, popular with honeymooners and couples. What makes Hemingway's special is its attention to detail, service and pampering touches. You will be delighted by the vases of roses everywhere, the welcome basket of strawberry in your room and the interesting menus.

A newcomer to Kenya's Watamu beach. Hemingway's beach club Kenya was built in 1988 on the site of the Old seafarers Hotel. The hotel was raised nine feet so that it would look down on the sea. From the beach there is a fortress like wall giving a rather forbidding aspect to the hotel, but when you are above, on the terrace or sitting in the dining room, you have lovely views down over the ocean and across the bay with its intriguing rock formations.

Dining at the Hemingway's beach hotel  Kenya.

The bar, dining room, and reception area are in huge white rondavels with dramatic soaring thatched roofs, so distinctive of the area. The main dining room has a sunken central area for buffet, band and dance floor.

Tables are arrayed around the raised circumference as well as in a “mistral’s gallery” on a higher level. Tables near windows have lovely views. Candle light dining is outside on the terrace during the gentle Kaskazi (Seasonal northeast wind) from late November to Easter. During the rest of the year, when the stronger Kusi blows, all meals are served in the main restaurant.

Hemingway’s beach club places an emphasis on dining. There is elegance in the starched tablecloths, fresh flowers at each table, and candlelit dinners. As well as a set menu, there are a la carte choices. You can also be served unusual and tasty snacks at poolside. We had breakfast crepes smothered with strawberries and yoghurt-a real treat. Afternoon teas are included in the tariff.

Big Game and Deep Sea Fishing at the Hemingway's Beach Hotel.

The bar is a large and pleasant room with big doors opening out to the ocean terrace. It sports impressive fishing trophies such as a 750lb. blue marlin. There is a friendly sit-up central bar and comfortable rush chairs around tables.

The feeling is airy, natural, and uncluttered. The hotel’s intimate nature combined with its popularity among British Kenyan and fishermen means that the bar is a place where new friends are made and fishing tales are swapped over many a drink. The manager will aptly remind you that the name Hemingway’s conjures up not only images of Africa and Fishing, but of drinking as well.

Many clients come to Hemingway’s beach club for the deep –sea fishing.

The hotel owns several twin engine boats and charters others. Full day and half day fishing trips are offered for both novice and skilled fishermen from august to May. The main billfish are sailfish and marlin.

Accommodations at Hemingway's Beach resort.

The Hemingway's beach resort has a capacity for 175 guests. There are two wings an older sea-view wing which has double rooms, and a brand new superior wing which includes triples and suites.

The bedrooms of the older wing are disappointingly small for a hotel of this calibre. They are, however, close to the ocean, and afford the best sea views. The new wing is two and three-stories high and angles back from the beach. You can see to the ocean beyond the gardens and swimming pools.

Facilities at the Hemmingway's Beach club.

All rooms have air-conditioning, mosquito-nets, fans and safe for valuables. All of the rooms except the suites have a balcony and a shower. The suites have bathtubs in addition to showers and a large sitting area instead of a balcony. Sliding glass doors open the rooms to light and air and distant sea views.

Superior rooms have bar fridges. Our favourites for being closest to the sea-Old wing 103-109 (ground floor) and New wing 145 (ground floor), 373 (top floor). Even in the bedrooms at Hemingway’s you are treated to many thoughtful extras-there is a poem and rosebud on your pillow at night and a bottle of Hemingway’s mineral water next to your bed.

Special options and activities at the Hemmingway's Beach resort.

Fishing (deep sea and inshore), snorkelling trips in a glass –bottom boat, windsurfing, diving, dhow trips on Mida Creek, free trips to Malindi for Shopping and to the nearby Gede Ruins, free transfer to and from Malindi airport, day-room facilities with shower (extra charge), video room, conference centre, small boutique and sundry shop.
